Oklahoma NAACP selects Boston Williamson to organize an NAACP chapter at University of Oklahoma (OU), according to his interview with OUDaily. However, Boston Williamson is white and is now the new president of NAACP on OU campus that has an underrepresented black student body. The black student population at OU is 5% whereas the white student population is 63%. NAACP selection of Williamson came after OU Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity chanted about excluding blacks from the fraternity and about hanging Nigg**s from a tree. The infamous racist chant resulted in the expulsion of 2 SAE members and the closing of SAE campus house.
Williamson, per interview with OUDaily, indicated that when Oklahoma NAACP State Conference (head of its Youth and College Division) approached him, he was reluctant to take the position as leader of NAACP because he was white. President of State NAACP is Anthony Douglas. According to the OUDaily interview, what changed Williamson’s mind was that the Oklahoma NAACP told him the last NAACP National president was white. For the sake of clearing up misinformation, it should be noted that the last NAACP national president who is Ben Jealous is not white. Ben Jealous is Black.
Could it be that the face of the NAACP’s leadership is reverting back to its founding origin.
